It was too much of a desperate situation.

If it had been the average person, would they have given up, or given into despair?

And then, that boy1, that was timider than the average person, lacked calm thinking and judgment.

However, that person managed to barely hold their ground.

And the idea they can come up with in this situation was for sure able to become a good idea to turn the situation around.

(Think! They react to sound! Search for something that can give off a sound!)

He dumped everything in the rucksack onto the ground.

He didn’t care about the number of zombies that grew from the sound.

(Found it! My phone!)

He could play music on the phone and throw it onto the main street.

The phone flew over the main street and started to pull the zombies.

And then, emptying the garbage can next to him by turning it over, he crawled into it.

He breathed shallowly.

“Aaaaa…”

“Uuuu… Aaaae…”

He heard the zombies groaning.

It sounded like the dead were calling him to bring him to hell.

Crunch… Crunchcrunch…

Every time the tottering footsteps came near, he held his hand over his mouth to suppress any screams and desperately endured it.

The footsteps ceased after some time.

He took a quick look from the garbage can.

Hearing the sound from the phone, the group of zombies had crowded together to a narrow extent.

If he was to dive into them, he’d probably be eaten up until there were only bones left.

Trembling, he put the stuff back into the rucksack.

He could by no means make a louder noise than the music coming from the phone.

He picked the things up extremely carefully.

(Huh?)

One zombie crawled on the ground toward him.

(W-why…? Why only that one!? This is bad… If I was to beat him, I’ll make a sound… I’ll definitely be noticed!)

The luggage was important, but his life was even more.

Holding only the luggage he had put into the rucksack and the metal bat, he stepped away stealthily.

He walked forward while turning back several times, and somehow, it seemed like no zombies were coming after him.

It hurt to have used the phone, but it couldn’t help to save his life.

(Rather than that…)

That zombie had been on his mind since some time ago.

It probably didn’t react to sound.

No, taking into account that it didn’t follow after him, it seemed like it couldn’t locate his location.

(Oh, a bike…)

He found a bike laying by the roadside.

If he got on this, it would probably make it easier to get to school.

“Alright, let’s go…”

Muttering in a small voice, he straddled the bike and started pedaling.

A few minutes after pedaling, he saw a brutal scene.

At the bento shop, which was always full of people, there wasn’t a single soul.

Though, on the shutter preventing people from drawing near, there was blood sticking to it.

(Harsh…)

He couldn’t find another word than that.

In a car that was stopped by the roadside, a groaning zombie was unable to move because of the seatbelt, and human flesh was stuck to the window of a butcher shop.

It wasn’t funny that human flesh was being exhibited at a butcher shop.

(What morbid humor! Damn it!)

Putting up with nausea and dizziness, he tried to keep his spirit up.

Before long, he could see the school.

The school he went to was the largest in the district, and the number of students was pretty high.

The school had a 2-meter high wall around it and had a north and south building. The north building was for classes while the south building was for club activities.

It was mandatory for every student to participate in club activities, but since at least three people could make whatever club they wanted, the rule was pretty much violated.

By the way, he was in the broadcasting club.

(Here, because of the high wall, those shouldn’t be able to get in.)

He arrived in front of the gate.

“Wha!?”

What reflected his eyes…

Was the opened gate.

It was the dead wandering around on the sport’s ground.

It was the window glass smeared in blood.

He realized that he couldn’t rest here.

No, maybe not anywhere in the world.

(This has to be a lie…)

It felt like he lost strength all over his body.

Still, his first priority was to find people still alive.

Taking a deep breath, he passed the gate and started walking silently.

T/N: Just a quick heads-up, the next 6 or so chapters will be from other students’ POVs.

  1. The POV has been changed to third person from now on.
